White Plains - Battle of White Plains Park
Date of Battle: October 28, 1776
The Battle
The Continentals realize their position in Manhattan is impossible to hold. They begin to withdraw, fighting a series of skirmishes with the advancing British. The two armies meet at White Plains, just north of Manhattan.
A relatively small force of Americans delays the British advance. The main Continental Army escapes further north into New York and then across the Hudson River to New Jersey.
Visiting the Battleground
The Battle of White Plains Park, at the corner of Whitney Street and Battle Avenue, is located where the battle took place. The small park includes interpretive panels providing information about the battle.
