Road Trip to the Major Battlegrounds of the American Revolution

We're visiting the sites of significant battles of the American Revolution. Michael Troy, the creator and host of the American Revolution Podcast, selected the sites and described the battles. Information on visiting these historic sites is from Donna Keesling, Editor of The History List.

  1. Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site

    Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site preserves the site of a battle between a detachment from British General Burgoyne's army and New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Vermont state militia commanded by General John Stark and Colonel Seth Warner.

  2. Brandywine Battlefield Park

    Brandywine Battlefield Park is a 52-acre park that encompasses the epicenter of George Washington’s continental encampment during the Battle of Brandywine, the largest single day engagement of the American Revolution.

  3. Brooklyn - Old Stone House & Washington Park

    The Old Stone House & Washington Park is an ongoing memorial to the Battle of Brooklyn, the largest battle of the Revolutionary War.

  4. Bunker Hill Monument

    Erected in 1842, this monument was one of the first ones constructed in the nation. There were two other memorials at the site of the monument that were dedicated to Dr. Joseph Warren and Col. William Prescott, who both were deemed heroes of Bunker Hill.

  5. Camden Battlefield

    Historic Camden owns and manages over 450 acres of the core battlefield of the Battle of Camden. During the Battle of Camden, the American army under command of Major General Horatio Gates was soundly defeated.

  6. Charleston - Fort Moultrie

    Fort Moultrie served as a defense for the South Carolina coastline beginning in the mid-1770s. Now a National Park System site, it has been restored to portray the major periods of its history, including during the American Revolution.

  7. Concord - Minute Man National Historical Park

    Minute Man National Historical Park preserves and interprets the buildings and landscapes of the first armed conflict of the American Revolution.

  8. Cowpens National Battlefield

    Cowpens National Battlefield commemorates the victory of Brigadier General Daniel Morgan over Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton at the Cow Pens, a well-known pasturing area.

  9. Dorchester Heights

    Dorchester Heights, one of eight sites that comprises Boston National Historical Park, commemorates the Continental army’s 1776 victory.

  10. Fort Washington - Bennett Park

    Bennett Park, which opened in 1929, was built on the site of Fort Washington. The Fort Washington Memorial in the park commemorates the battle.

  11. Germantown - Cliveden

    During the 1777 Battle of Germantown, British troops barricaded themselves inside Cliveden.

  12. Guilford Courthouse National Military Park

    Guilford Courthouse National Military Park commemorates the Battle of Guilford Courthouse between Major General Nathanael Greene's militia and Continental army and Lord Charles Earl Cornwallis’ British and Hessian army.

  13. Kings Mountain National Military Park

    Kings Mountain National Military Park preserves the site of the battle of Kings Mountain, an important American victory during the Revolutionary War.

  14. Lexington Battle Green

    The site of the first battle of the American Revolution. The Green contains historical markers and monuments commemorating the battle. Costumed guides staff the Green during the spring, summer, and fall months.

  15. Monmouth Battlefield State Park

    Monmouth Battlefield State Park preserves and interprets the battle landscape of hilly farmland and hedgerows.

  16. Newport - The Battle of Rhode Island Site

    The Battle of Rhode Island Site is the partially preserved location of the Battle of Rhode Island, also known as the Battle of Newport.

  17. Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site

    Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site commemorates the Battle of Oriskany, considered one of the bloodiest battles of the American Revolutionary War.

  18. Paoli Battlefield Historical Park

    The Paoli Battlefield Historical Park and adjacent Paoli Memorial Grounds commemorate the battle and preserve the gravesite of fifty-two soldiers.

  19. Princeton Battlefield State Park

    The Princeton Battlefield State Park commemorates the Battle of Princeton by preserving the fields of battle and memorializing soldiers who fought there.

  20. Quebec - Fort Chambly National Historic Site

    Fort Chambly National Historic Site features the restored Fort Chambly, occupied by General Richard Montgomery and his troops during the winter of 1775-1776.

  21. Saratoga National Historical Park

    Saratoga National Historical Park preserves and protects sites associated with the battles, siege, and surrender of British forces at Saratoga, which were decisive events in the winning of American independence.

  22. Savannah - Capture of Savannah

    The Capture of Savannah historical marker is located approximately 100 yards west of where Continental forces were posted to defend against a British attack on December 29, 1778.

  23. Trenton Battle Monument

    The Trenton Battle Monument commemorates the American victory at the first Battle of Trenton which occurred on December 26, 1776.

  24. Valcour Island

    Valcour Island, the site of the first naval battle of the American Revolution, is now part of the Adirondack Park.

  25. White Plains - Battle of White Plains Park

    The Battle of White Plains Park commemorates the battle that took place on October 28, 1776.

  26. Yorktown Battlefield

    Yorktown Battlefield, part of Colonial National Historical Park, commemorates the Siege of Yorktown and includes the Moore House which was used for the surrender negotiations between Allied and British representatives.
