Atlantic Canada Report
Here is a short report from Atlantic Canada.
A group from the region met at Sherbrooke Village in Nova Scotia from Sept 19 to Sept 21.
Members in attendance represented Sherbrooke Village, the Highland Village, Fortress louisbourg, Ross Farm and Orwell Corner.
Mark Sajatovich, Executive Director at Sherbrooke Village and his staff including Keith Gallant, Lynn Haines and many others were most welcoming and gracious hosts.
Our visit included the opportunity to participate first hand in the successful Hand on History program, and for behind the scenes tours of the costuming department, the new ventilation system being installed in the woodworkers shop and the stamp mill being readied for interpretation as part of an exhibit on local goldmining.
The agenda for the ALHFAM meeting included an opportunity for all participants to present a short update on the past season at their individual sites, highlighting their successes and challenges.
Mark Sajatovich, as newly appointed SV Executive Director spoke to his vision for SV and his intent to position it as a supplier of certain heriatge products not only to other sites in Nova Scotia but also to a broader regional area.
Lester Marchand, Visitor Experience Manager, Fortress of Louisbourg spoke to their plans to allow visitors to help decide what experience they would like to enjoy, and their hopes to change their experience with visitors "from a one night stand to a relationship".
There was general discussion about sharing expertise that is already available at different regional sites rather than continually reinventing the wheel and also initial plans were put in place to travel pool to next years international conference at Plimouth Plantation .
