Museums In Action Conference

Museums In Action 2014: Stem To Steam

March 30 - April 1, 2014 - Albany Marriott

Museums in Action is the annual professional conference of the Museum Association of New York. Unique in form and function, this conference invites conversation and inspires action. Museums in Action is the conference where YOU do the talking! Your ideas form the basis of the conference program. Like pollination is to flowers, dialogue is to ideas. Dialogue creates the blossom.

How will you participate and help your peers through this important conversation taking place at the 2014 Conference? Museums in Action encourages you to hold your ideas in the palm of your hand to allow them to be picked up and used by others!

Museums in Action is the conference where YOU do the talking! Your ideas form the basis of the conference program.  Like pollination is to flowers, dialogue is to ideas. Dialogue creates the blossom.

What is STEAM?

STEAM = Science and Technology integrated through Engineering and the “Arts,” all based in Mathematical elements.
Innovations emerging from the intersection of the sciences, engineering, arts, and design are transforming our economy, culture and learning contexts. Innovation stemming from interdisciplinary creativity is a major contributor to the development of new, sustainable economies and harmonious, cooperating societies.

STEM + Arts = STEAM

STEAM is a movement championed by Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and widely adopted by institutions, corporations and individuals. You can read more about the initiative and the philosophy that underpins it at Stemtosteam.org.

MUSEUMS + STEAM
While teachers are limited in the classroom, and traditional schools are only just considering merging disciplines, this is something that museums already do! And we do it well! Museums’ non-traditional educational environments are perfect for this cross-curricular approach to teaching. Many museum programs already have been adding the A for Arts into the STEM programming. This includes visual and performing arts, humanities, social sciences, language arts and history. Whether it be through exhibitions, scope of collections or educational programming, museums have the natural capability to excel at STEAM initiatives!

"MUSEUM MUST HAVES"
Sunday’s sessions and workshops will address topics that those of you who attended last year's conference specifically requested in our post-conference survey. You spoke and we listened. For Sunday, we will present sessions and workshops that address "Museum Must Haves" such as:

  • Collections management basics.
  • HR/administration issues.
  • Earned income generation.
  • Designing museum spaces.
  • State initiatives such as REDCs, Common Core, Path Through History.
  • Distance learning.
  • State impact/advocacy.

Monday’s and Tuesday’s sessions will follow the conference theme: STEM to STEAM.

Leading Meaningful Community Discussions: Facilitation Workshop by the New York Council for the Humanities

Location: Albany Institute of History and Art; 9am-4pm

$75 members; $90 non-members; includes light breakfast, lunch and materials

Conversation-based programming creates opportunities for strangers to become neighbors and for neighbors to shape communities. Join us for a full-day in-depth workshop on facilitating text-based discussions. Over the course of the day, Council staff will help you learn how to facilitate conversations that build community and help participants think critically about important ideas that matter to us all. We’ll take an in-depth look at how to craft effective discussion questions; best practices for connecting with participants and managing the flow of conversation; and ways conversation-based programs can help build and strengthen your audience's connection to your museum.  When you leave the workshop, we hope you’ll be more excited than ever to lead discussions in your community and to transform your museum into a center of community dialogue.

The Council has previously hosted three successful facilitation workshops, in Saratoga Springs, New York City and Rochester; this year we're partnering with MANY to offer this special opportunity to museum staff across our state.

Workshop Leaders: Erika Halstead, Senior Program Officer and Leah Nahmias, Program Officer, New York Council for the Humanities
