The native peoples of the American South and West were often seen to be at odds with the westward push of American civilization.  In 1830, President Andrew Jackson signed into power the Indian Removal Act, and subsequently created the Dawes List and the infamous Trail of Tears.  These events had a profound effect on our culture and society.
