Illustrated Talk about the few Loyalist Tories in Marblehead and their Mansions

    Improve listing Presented by

Illustrated talk at the King Hooper Mansion about a half dozen Loyalist Marbleheaders and their mansions, as well as some of their experiences at the hands of their zealous Patriot neighbors.

Marblehead’s most famous Loyalist, Robert "King" Hooper was one of them.  And while his conservative inclinations were moderate, and he was welcomed back into town afterward, one of his sons was a flaming Tory and suffered the consequences. However, several other sons were active Patriots and advocated for independence.

The talk will tell what happened to some of the few in Marblehead who chose not to become rebel insurgents as the American Revolution exploded into a war in which nearly 1200 rebel Marbleheaders would serve, both in the Continental Army and as privateers at sea, from a town of just under 5,000 people and 950 families in 1765 -- the sixth most populous metropolis in British North America.

A tour of the (Loyalist) King Hooper Mansion from 1 to 2 pm precedes the 3 pm talk ($5 suggested donation for adults / no RSVP needed). Enjoy the MAA art exhibits in between the tour and the talk.
