Gallery Activities: Women’s History Month

People are the driving force in the stories we tell in our museum. March’s gallery programs shine a spotlight on women’s history and the roles women have played in shaping Ohio’s story. The following programs are free to all paid museum visitors or OHS members.

Reader’s Theater: the 1950s
The 1950s ushered in a new era for advertisements and product marketing. Hear advertisements aimed at women from the 1950s spoken in the voices of the 21st century.

Hidden Mothers
The family portrait is a time-honored tradition, but during the Victorian era mothers appeared in these photos in an unexpected way. Join one of our history interpreters to learn more about the “hidden mother” phenomenon through photos in our Faces of Appalachia exhibit.

Staff Pick: Communal Groups in Ohio
Join a museum interpreter to discuss some of the fascinating communal societies who helped shape Ohio's history and see some items from them on the museum floor.

Staff Pick: WAVES Uniform
Women became an integral part of the U.S. armed forces during World War II. Come learn how Dayton-area female U.S. Navy personnel helped to crack the German Enigma code, and how no one knew their role in that achievement until the 1990s.

Make a Suffrage Sign Activity
See examples of signs from the women’s suffrage movement and make one of your own.

Women’s Working Conditions – Real or Not Real?
The Industrial Revolution was a time of expanded industry, with many women seeking work. Come test your knowledge of working conditions and help separate fact from fiction.
