The compelling social, cultural and architectural history of this dynamic town as told through the built environment, which includes one of the oldest coastal fortifications on the northeast coast (1644), the second-oldest Town House (and oldest wooden municipal building) still standing and in civic use (1727-29 with high-style Georgian architectural features), plus nearly 300 houses from before 1775 and 800 homes and buildings from or before the 1840s. (Both periods, pre- & post-Rev. include a handful of converted ware-houses). The stories are told via periodic walking tours, outdoor presentations, or occasional indoor illustrated talks at other local organizations.
