The Historical Society of Pennsylvania is one of the oldest historical societies and one of the largest family history libraries in the nation. Following a complete merger with the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies, HSP is also a leading repository of immigrant and ethnic history. It is second only to the Library of Congress for material on the nation’s founding and is the country’s third most popular destination for genealogical study. With approximately 21 million records including manuscripts, graphics, and books that span over 350 years of history, HSP is an invaluable resource for historical research.

HSP serves thousands of on-site visitors each year. It also offers a research-by-mail service and extensive online resources, including a library catalog, finding aids, digital collection, and curricular materials. Directions/Transportation/Parking

By Car

From east of Philadelphia: Travel west on Route 676. Take the Broad Street/Central Philadelphia exit. Proceed south on 15th Street and turn left onto Locust Street, crossing Broad Street and continuing to 13th Street. The Historical Society is on the right, at 1300 Locust Street. Several parking facilities are on the left.

From north or south of Philadelphia via I-95: Exit onto Route 676 West. Take the Broad Street/Central Philadelphia exit. Proceed south on 15th Street and turn left onto Locust Street, crossing Broad Street and continuing to 13th Street.

From west of Philadelphia: Travel east on Route 676. Take the Broad Street/Central Philadelphia exit. Proceed south on 15th Street and turn left onto Locust Street, crossing Broad Street and continuing to 13th Street.

Parking Options:

The EZ Park lots located at 1309 Locust Street (directly across from HSP) and 1213-19 Walnut Street offer discounted parking for HSP visitors. Let the parking lot attendant know you are coming to HSP so that you may have your parking ticket validated at HSP's front desk to get the discounted rate.

Public Transportation

Bus Route: SEPTA bus route 12 stops on Locust Street directly in front of HSP.

Subways: HSP is two blocks east of the Walnut/Locust stop on the Broad Street Subway or four blocks south of the 13th/Market stop on the Market/Frankford Subway. There is a PATCO stop at the corner of 13th and Locust Streets, directly in front of HSP.

Train: Take any SEPTA commuter rail line to Market East Station. Walk south on 12th Street to Locust Street. Then turn right and walk one block west on Locust to 13th Street. If you prefer to ride the train into Suburban Station, you may walk past City Hall south on Broad Street to Locust, where you turn left and walk two blocks.

Hotel Accommodations

The Holiday Inn Express Midtown offers a discounted room rate for our out-of-town patrons. The hotel is located one block from HSP at 1305 Walnut Street. When reserving a room, mention you are visiting the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to receive this special rate.
