World War I at One Hundred

The First World War spread across Europe one hundred years ago. Virginia-born President Woodrow Wilson initially supported neutrality, but ultimately America was drawn into the war in April 1917. Virginians served both in the trenches and on the home front during the Great War, and the VHS collection contains memorial plaques, sheet music, postcards, photographs, jewelry, scrapbooks, books, and manuscripts that record the wartime hardships endured by Virginians a century ago.

Paulette Schwarting, director of technical services at the VHS, and Marta Jean Hofacre, serials and preservation library assistant at the VHS, will be your guides for this tour.
