Not to be confused with South Boston, the South End is one of the city's most vibrant neighborhoods. We'll go beyond its well-known restaurants, funky boutiques, and galleries to explore the area’s heart and history. The South End, created largely by landfill before the development of the Back Bay, was intended to be the new residential area for Boston’s 19th century elite. We’ll discuss the neighborhood’s 20th-century transition from an an ethnically diverse, urban neighborhood to one that has become increasingly gentrified, and together we’ll explore the South End’s residential architecture, grand public buildings, and pocket parks.
