Brandon Reintjes, Curator at the Montana Museum of Art & Culture in Missoula, will present a lecture titled The History of the MIA. Founded in 1948, the Montana Institute of the Arts (MIA) was a grassroots, statewide organization that tied together the relatively isolated practitioners of various arts and crafts across Montana through publications, an annual festival, and traveling exhibits. In 1954, the MIA began a collection of artworks solicited from member artists. The organization collected for more than 30 years at a time when there were few other collecting institutions in the state and none that focused exclusively on fine art.
