The Battle of Bennington

By author Dr. Michael Gabriel of Kutztown University

Drawing upon scores of pension records, diaries, and claim petitions, Kutztown's Dr. Michael Gabriel examines the Battle of Bennington through the eyes of it's participants.  On August 16, 1777, John Stark and a motley collection of militia, supported by Seth Warner's Green Mountain Boys, won a resounding victory near Bennington, Vermont, against combined German, British, and Loyalist forces.  This often overlooked engagement laid the foundation for the American victory at Saratoga two months later.  Dr. Gabriel's presentation includes accounts from soldiers on both sides and civilians, women, and children who experienced the fear and uncertainty as loved ones departed to fight for the fledgling United States.
