At 6 PM on Oct 3, 2018, at the Marblehead Museum galleries at 170 Washington Street, Marblehead, historian Robert Booth will speak about Colonel Jeremiah Lee (1721-1775), a wealthy shipping merchant of Marblehead who turned against the British Empire and was the first rebel leader to die in the cause of independence.  Col. Lee was one of foremost rebels in Massachusetts: importer of munitions, liaison to leaders in Maryland and Virginia, head of the Marblehead rebel militia regiment in 1775, chairman of the Essex County rebel congress in Autumn 1774, and committee chair of the Massachusetts rebel legislature thereafter. He risked an enormous shipping fortune, and died as a result of actions on the eve of the Battle of Lexington and Concord -- the first rebel leader to give his life in the cause of independence.
