Commonly associated with democratic patriotism and the American and French Revolutions, Freemasonry in the 18th century was in fact far more subtle and complex than the familiar myths. In particular, the early Freemasons of Rhode Island—mobile, religiously diverse, and politically fragmented—defy generalizations.
