The Old Schwamb Mill in Arlington is pleased to present its third annual Oktoberfest celebration on Saturday, October 5, 2019 in recognition of the Schwamb family’s German immigrant heritage.
Celebrate Arlington’s Oktoberfest under the beer tent with German food, including traditional bratwurst, pretzels, and pastries, as well as artisan craft beer from Somerville’s Aeronaut Brewery. This family-friendly event will also feature children’s activities including a scavenger hunt, crafts, and a bean bag toss. Take a self-guided tour of the Mill building itself and learn how the hand-turned wooden oval frames are still manufactured today using the same equipment that has been in use since the mid-1800s. Last but not least, enjoy musical performances by the Grüveminers Brass Band and western swing by the Beantown Buckeroos.
In 1847, Schwamb brothers Charles and Frederick, members of a German family which had emigrated to America, bought a mill in Arlington. There, they carried on the family tradition of working in wood, with techniques brought with them from Europe, and they specialized in circular and oval wood picture and mirror frames and lengths of carved molding.
Today, the Mill exists as a working museum. The Old Schwamb Mill is open Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10 am-4 pm for guided tours, including frame-turning demonstrations on original 19th century lathes.
