Join author Neal Karlen for an illustrated presentation and book signing to celebrate the publication of "Augie’s Secrets: The Minneapolis Mob and the King of the Hennepin Strip" (MHS Press, April 2013). Augie Ratner, the proprietor of Augie’s Theater Lounge and Bar on Hennepin Avenue, was the unofficial mayor of Minneapolis’s downtown strip in the 1940s and ’50s. Augie Ratner knew everyone and everyone knew Augie and they told him everything. Mixing careful research with long suppressed family and community stories, Neal Karlen, Augie’s great-nephew, tells the real story of the seamy underside of Minneapolis, where mobsters, celebrities, comedians and politicians including Jimmy Hoffa, Henny Youngman, Kid Cann, John Dillinger, Jack Dempsey, Peggy Lee, Groucho Marx, Lenny Bruce and Gypsy Rose Lee mingled.

Following his presentation, Mr. Karlen will sign copies of the book which can be purchased in the Mill City Museum store. A cash bar— including Manhattans, an Augie’s favorite- will open at 6 p.m.

Mill City Museum is located in downtown Minneapolis on the west bank of the Mississippi River, just north of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, near the corner of Park Avenue and 2nd Street.

Look for the Gold Medal Flour sign. The museum is right next door.

Via Light Rail: Park and Ride from Ft. Snelling. 18 minutes to Downtown East/Metrodome Station. Walk west 1/2 block to Park Avenue, north on Park Avenue 4 short blocks. MetroTransit Information.

Driving
From the South: Take I-35W north to the 3rd Street/University Avenue exit #17C. Follow sign for West Bank. Turn left onto Washington Avenue. Turn right onto Park Avenue. Mill City Museum will be directly ahead to the right.

From the North: From the North: Take I-35W south to the Washington Avenue exit #17C. Turn right onto Washington Avenue. Turn right onto Park Avenue. Mill City Museum will be directly ahead to the right.

From the North West: Take I-94 east to the 4th Street North exit #230. Follow 4th Street to Park Avenue and turn left, cross Washington Avenue, Mill City Museum will be directly ahead to the right.

From the West: Take I-394 east to the Washington Avenue exit #9C. Turn right on Washington to Park Avenue. Turn left on Park Avenue. Mill City Museum will be directly ahead to the right.

From the East: Take I-94 west to the 5th street exit #234B. Go right on 11th Avenue, cross Washington and take the first left turn onto South Second Street. The museum will be on your right.

Parking Information
Mill City Museum does not have its own parking lot or ramp. However there are many parking options available.

Mill Quarter Ramp is located at 711 South Second Street. The fully automated ramp accepts cash and credit cards for daily parking. Parking fees start at $6. Fees increase during Vikings games and Guthrie Theater performances.

There is a surface parking lot directly across from our main entrance on 2nd street. Parking fees start at $5. Fees increase during Vikings games and Guthrie Theater performances. Cash or Check only in self-service drop box.

There are a limited number of city parking meters outside our main entrance on 2nd street and on the surrounding blocks ($1.00 per hour, 2 hour limit).
