Music in the House: Holiday House Tours with Musical Accompaniment

Pianist David Maxwell will play during public tours on Saturday afternoons, 1-3 pm, on December 8, 15, and 22.

Join us to hear the restored Chickering piano in the Longfellow House. Regular house tours will feature special musical accompaniment. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow purchased the Chickering square grand piano in 1843 when he came to Portland, Maine, during his honeymoon with his second wife, Frances Appleton. It was one of the poet’s prize possessions and was kept in his homes first in Cambridge, then in Nahant.

The piano was donated to MHS in 1908. It was restored by renowned piano restorer Timothy Hamilton of Boston in 2009, and is now played periodically at special events.

Participation in tours will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
