Micro-Gallery Exhibit Opening Concert and Lecture: Private Works

Saturday, April 6 | 2:30 - 4:30 pm | Free

Performances by The Generous Ensemble and the Hartt Composers' Ensemble will commemorate the worldwide centennial celebration of 1913--the year that gave birth to modernism in America--and showcase the new compositions that are featured in the CHS Micro-Gallery exhibit. A pre-concert lecture by Private Works resident composer Matt Sargent will discuss his new composition, "108 Separation Songs", inspired by colonial New England composer William Billings's 108 songs of the "New England Psalm Singer" (1770). Billings's songbook was composed as a travelogue of small musical pieces written for church and municipal events during his travels across Connecticut and New England. The lecture will discuss the history of the Billings hymn tunes and include program notes and commentary about the music and its connection to Billings.
