Liberty & Union Festival
Liberty and Union Weekend is a proud City of Taunton tradition. Held each fall, the Weekend celebrates the first recorded raising of the City’s flag – the Liberty and Union flag – in October 1774. According to the historical record, in the years leading up the American Revolution this was the first time a flag of rebellion was publicly raised by the American colonists in opposition to British rule.
This year, the Liberty & Union Festival will take place on Church Green in Taunton on Saturday, October 17, 2015. Consisting of a variety of activities, free and open to the public, the festival will include a ceremonial flag raising, appearances by costumed reenactors, musical performances by fife and drum corps, a live pottery demonstration, participatory colonial dance instruction, a “patriotic pumpkin” decorating activity, and a period-themed Johnnycake Breakfast. Visitors can also walk the Liberty and Union Trail through Downtown Taunton and learn about the city's historic past. All are invited to be a part of this free, fall festival and we hope that you can join us!
