The Politics of Memory: Lafayette in American Collections

This lecture will examine how Lafayette's image, history, and legend have been used n ot only by political historians and art curators, but also by diplomats and statesmen. Particular attention will be paid to the formation of one of the greatest collection of Lafayette material in existence, the Fabius Collection, and its transferral, in 19623, to Cornell University - an aquisition of historic proportions that was discussed even by Charles de Gaulle and John F. Kennedy.
