Maine Jewish Film Festival presents
Film Screening: Jewish Soldiers in Blue and Gray

This documentary, narrated by John Milius and featuring Sam Waterston as the voice of Abraham Lincoln, traces the remarkable history of the Civil War Jews who fought on both sides—7,000 for the Union and 3,000 for the Confederacy. The war split the Jewish community as deeply as it did the nation at large: some prominent Jews, including Jewish slave owners, cited the Torah to justify slavery, while others were leaders in the abolitionist movement or established their synagogues as stops on the Underground Railroad.

Film director Dr. Jonathan Gruber will be on hand to answer questions following the 60-minute screening, which will lead into a reception sponsored by Maine Media Workshops + College (from 4:15-5:15PM).
