How Does Cambridge Engage? Opening Conversation

    Improve listing Presented by

Join the Cambridge Historical Society in launching this year's program theme, "How does Cambridge engage?" with a conversation between Dr. Karilyn Crockett, MIT lecturer in Public Policy and Urban Planning, and Diana Lempel, the Society's Doing History Curator.

Karilyn and Diana will discuss how everyday people in our city took collective action to stop the Inner Belt and envision a different future for themselves. What do these actions have to teach us today? What collective memory of this time lives on, and where does it live?

Karilyn’s new book "People before Highways: Boston Activists, Urban Planners, and a New Movement for City Making" (UMASS Press 2018) investigates a 1960s era grassroots movement to halt urban extension of the U.S. interstate highway system and the geographic and political changes in Boston that resulted.
