Hard War in the Old Dominion: the Civil War in 1864 by Brig. Gen. John W. Mountcastle

This is a two-part class taught by Brig. Gen. John W. Mountcastle (USA, Ret.). Class one will take place on Thursday, March 6, and class two on Thursday, March 13.

This is a two-part class. The first session will focus upon the elevation of U.S. Grant to general in chief, the Overland Campaign, and the failure of the Union Armies of the James and Potomac to capture Petersburg in the summer of 1864. The second session will concentrate on Confederate and Union activities in the Shenandoah Valley, from the battle of New Market in May through Sheridan's triumph at Cedar Creek in October 1864.

Brig. Gen. John W. Mountcastle (USA, Ret.), former chief of military history for the U.S. Army, teaches Civil War history courses at the University of Richmond.  He has served as the historian accompanying several VHS tours and has previously conducted three See You in Class sessions as part of the society's Civil War Sesquicentennial Program.
