Gropius Birthday Celebration - Metallisches Fest

Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus school, brought a playful tradition of celebrations a la Bauhaus with him to his post at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Each May, his students and colleagues celebrated his birthday in Harvard Yard as Grope-Fests. On May 18, 1970 almost a year after his death, The Architects' Collaborative (TAC) hosted a Metallisches Fest as a memorial celebration of Gropius’s life.

In the Grope-Fest spirit, on May 19 Gropius House offers half-price admission ($5) to visitors wearing anything metal. Also on this day, Metallisches Fest objects and other ephemera from past Grope-Fests will be on view in the house as part of the guided tour. Tours available on the hour.
