Historic Landscape to Natural Setting: The Evolution of the Gardens and Grounds of the Lord Mansion and the State Capital Museum

In 1922, the Lord family began to plan their new home in a park-like setting. Employing esteemed local architect Joseph Wohleb to design an elegant, Italianate home, they turned to renowned landscape designer Fred Cole of Kew Gardens in London to create a setting worthy of the estate. Now, the Lord Mansion has been home to the State Capital Museum for nearly 70 years, and museum curators, in partnership with the Evergreen State College, designed and installed a living tribute to Curator Emeritus Delbert McBride. Tour the Lord Mansion's grounds and ethnobotannical gardens while learning more about its creation.
