Virginia Before the Civil War: Moonlight, Magnolias, Decline, and Dissension
William Rasmussen
Lead Curator and Lora M. Robins Curator
The myth of “Old Virginia” emerged as a result of a society in flux. This tour explores how the growth of industrial cities and improvements in transportation combined with political decline, the continued suffering of slaves, and the emigration of thousands of Virginians to the West to threaten the old order.
