Join us for an interactive panel discussion as we explore both historic and contemporary perspectives on emancipation from slavery.

Panelists:

Dr. James Downs, Assistant Professor of History at Connecticut College.  Dr. Downs specializes in 19th-century U.S. history and African American studies.

Ms. Deborah Scates, an officer in the Hartford Police Department whose work to end modern day human trafficking has been profiled in a 2011 article in Vanity Fair.

Dr. Lois Brown, an award-winning English professor at Mount Holyoke College, who specializes in 19th-century African American and American literature as well as abolitionist narratives.

The program is part of Seizing Liberty, Stowe Center events marking the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and linking emancipation to the 21st century.
