Encuentro 2018 is a three-day convening that brings together a broad coalition of stakeholders for critical conversations about the future of Latin@ heritage in the U.S. and its role in enriching our quality of life. It a historic moment as we bring together the West cost with the East, while partnering with Rhode Island Latino Arts, a Latino organization and joining the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission with their 33rd conference. Together we look forward to exploring the cultural heritage of our state’s historic places and beginning a new chapter for historic preservation in Rhode Island.

The event includes tours, panel discussions, and social gatherings over the course of three days. Tours will showcase sites in Providence and the Blackstone Valley that express Latino cultural history, from the Broad Street corridor to the mill communities of Pawtucket, Cumberland, and Central Falls. We will also explore Downtown Providence—its preservation projects, public art, and ethnic history. Panel discussions with national and local leaders will take on topics including murals as history, the next generation of Latino preservationists, and historic preservation in underrepresented communities.

Founded in 2014, Latinos in Heritage Conservation (LHC) is a national organization of professionals, scholars, and community advocates dedicated to promoting historic preservation in Latin@ communities throughout the United States. We seek to elevate Latin@ historic places and stories as part of a more inclusive American narrative and to sustain the living cultural heritage of the country’s diverse Latin@ communities.

Established by the General Assembly in 1968 and expanded to include heritage programs in 1994, the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission identifies and protects historic buildings, districts, structures, and archaeological sites and also documents and celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Rhode Island's people.
