The Digital Commonwealth Outreach & Education Committee invites you to register for the following event:

Collections in the Classroom

When: Wednesday May 1, 2019, 10:30 AM-12:00 PM

Where: Canton Public Library, Aldrich Meeting Room, 786 Washington St, Canton, MA 02021

We are very pleased to be able to offer this popular event again!

Whether you work at a library, historical society, school or museum chances are you have teachers and students using our facility.  Maybe you’ve already been asked to create an activity or present a program for a class.  Or a teacher has asked for your help planning a lesson.  The digitized materials on Digital Commonwealth are a treasure trove for teachers looking to cover everything from the American Revolution to (fairly) current events, from US history to local history. Join Michelle LeBlanc, Director of Education for the Norman B. Leventhal Map and Education Center for a 90 minute session to help you connect your unique collection with local teachers.

We will begin – as teachers do – with the basics of the current MA history and social sciences curriculum frameworks as well as the Common Core standards. Then, we’ll demonstrate some approaches the Map Center uses to engage students with its resources – from the Library of Congress’ Teaching with Primary Sources model to interactive digital tools. Finally, you’ll get to try your hand at creating a simple classroom activity or primary source set based on your collections and how they might connect to K-12 classroom instruction.
