The Battle of Bunker Hill had extreme impact on both the British and colonial military forces who fought on June 17, 1775. Although the British won the high ground that day, they did so at incredible cost and casualties that would directly contribute to their evacuation of the city of Boston on March 17, 1776. The colonial militiamen were unable to hold Bunker Hill and were forced to retreat to Cambridge. Nevertheless, they took with them inspiration to continue to fight “in defense of [their] … Liberties & Country.”Join Park Ranger Gabriella Hornbeck to discover how 18th and 19th century American and British popular culture used poetry and song to memorialize this significant battle and its consequences.
