Boxes, Buckets, and Toys: the Craftsmen of Hingham

In 1818, one out of every three men in Hingham was engaged in the woodenware industry. Hingham craftsmen made buckets, tubs, pails, and wooden boxes which made their way throughout New England and beyond, earning the town the nickname, "Bucket Town." In the mid- to late 19th century, the Hingham craftsmen started turning out wooden toys, including elaborately detailed miniature furniture which, like the buckets and boxes, were distributed nationwide. Our exhibit includes dozens of examples of Hingham woodenware from our collection, associated artifacts, documents, and images, as well as interactive displays.
