Beatrix Farrand: Private Gardens, Public Landscapes

For Maine Historical Society's annual Olmsted Lecture, Landscape historian and preservation consultant Judith Tankard, author of Beatrix Farrand: Private Gardens, Public Landscapes (Monacelli Press/Random House, 2009), presents a talk on Farrand's life, work, and influence. Farrand was one of America’s most celebrated landscape architects renowned for private gardens, many of which were located in Maine, as well as consulting work for some of the country’s most prestigious universities and colleges.

Judith, 2nd Vice President of the Beatrix Farrand Society, received an M.A. in art history from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and taught at the Landscape Institute, Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University for over 20 years. In 2000, she was awarded a Gold Medal by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for her role in the advancement of historic New England gardens. She is the author or co-author of eight illustrated books on landscape history, including her most recent publication, Gertrude Jekyll and the Country House Garden. Beatrix Farrand: Private Gardens, Public Landscapes was named an Honor Book for the 2010 Historic New England Book Prize.
