This paper will present a developmental perspective on religious culture as a whole in the British Colonies and the Revolutionary nation from the eve of the Great Awakening to the Bill of Rights. It seeks to include all of the religious communions resident in British North America during the period in an integrated perspective that identifies their common processes of growth and change, informed by a broad concept of religious culture and new evidence from an original congregational census and a comprehensive survey of the religious bibliography of the period. This paper is not addressed only to specialists in religious history. It is, in addition, an effort to engage a wider range of historical interpreters in a discourse about the larger contours of American religious culture in the period.
