A Misplaced Massacre: Sand Creek in History and Memory - History Colorado Center

Tuesday, February 19, 2013 - 1:00pm - 2:00pm | 7:00pm - 8:00pm

For nearly a century and a half, the Sand Creek Massacre has been at the center of struggles over history and memory in the West, from government investigations launched in the massacre's aftermath to the recently opened Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site. Join Dr. Ari Kelman of the University of California, Davis, as he discusses this controversial chapter of Colorado's past in his new book, A Misplaced Massacre: Struggling Over the Memory of Sand Creek.

Abraham Lincoln had a strong connection to Colorado. One of his first acts as president was to appoint Colorado Territorial Governor William Gilpin. One of his last acts before leaving for Ford's Theater was to tell Schuyler Colfax, "Don't forget to tell those Colorado miners that the speech I gave you is for them." Actor Dennis Boggs presents a first-person look at Lincoln's life in this living history event. Boggs has portrayed Lincoln for years, on the History Channel, PBS, and elsewhere.
