A Life in Color: Two Cultural Makers, Centuries Apart features the bold and colorful work of Portsmouth artist and educator Richard Haynes. The exhibition is presented in partnership with the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire and Historic New England.

Haynes’ paintings were inspired by Jacqueline Tobin’s book, Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story About Quilts and the Underground Railroad. The works of art depict vibrant quilt patterns to tell the story of how enslaved men and women used encoded quilts to help navigate their escape on the Underground Railroad. Haynes is a painter, photographer, lecturer, professor, mentor, and a strong advocate for social justice. He is the Associate Director of Admissions for Diversity at the University of New Hampshire.

On view at Governor John Langdon House, 143 Pleasant Street, Portsmouth, N.H., through October 15, 2018.
