In 1670 a free black woman bought a house and land in Boston, at a time when few women or people of color could own land in the New World. This unusual purchase makes Zipporah Potter Atkins the first black female property owner on record in Boston. Dr. Vivian Johnson, Boston University associate professor emerita of education, will talk about her extraordinary discovery and continuing research into the life of Zipporah Potter Atkins and how this colonial woman was able to navigate the oppressive social straits of early New England and acquire a home of her own.
